Today’s Post by Joe Farace
Hello Noah, Hello—Suzzie
In the above quote, Suzzie may be singing to a cute Teddy Bear but I feel like I’m talking to the biblical Noah asking, “How’s that Arc construction doing? Facts: Denver recorded one of its wettest Mays—and May is typically the rainiest month of the year—in decades. Total rainfall in June in Denver is currently 1.81 inches which is 1.51 inches above normal. It has now rained 11 of the last 12 days and while it is sunny as I write this, rain is forecast in three hours. Denver has now received 70% of the city’s annual precipitation. Oh yeah, and our roof started leaking…
Is is wet outside? Is it soggy? Is it a good time to make photographs? Maybe? I’ve written about this topic before and suggest you can make interesting photographs when the weather is not at it’s best Sunny 16 behaviors.

And while I have rhapsodized about shooting in the rain with my post, Travel Tuesday: Things to Do in Tokyo When You’re Wet, I want to make one point: When I was in Japan, I was shooting with a digital camera and it wasn’t mine, it was on loan from Canon. But the lenses I used belong to me and one of them that I really, really liked didn’t fare all that well under these soggy conditions. You can read that sad, sad tale here.
Shooting with film isn’t necessarily more difficult than shooting with a digital camera but the big difference is every time I click the shutter I hear the sound of a cash register bell. You see, when I shoot film I want to feel like I have, at least, a small chance that I’m going to capture a good looking image. It doesn’t have to be perfect but I would prefer that it would be something that I’m not embarrassed by. As so many of you have pointed out to me in the past shooting film, these days, is not cheap and there’s always the possibility—if you don’t process your own film—that the lab may not do that great of a job. This has happened to me, before and heck, you can even screw it up if you process it yourself!
So when can readers expect #filmfriday to return? In the words of the late Jerry Pournelle “real soon now…”
