The See-Through Clothing & Lingerie Series: Scarlet Ana

by | Apr 23, 2023

The #corsetmonday series will be soon coming to an end and I’m planning on starting a new series based on models wearing see-through clothing. The reaction to my first previews was quite positive both on Instagram and here. So here’s a fourth preview. Lingerie is the maximum expression of a woman’s femininity – Dolce & Gabbana.

Lingerie is a category of women’s clothing that includes undergarments, sleepwear, and lightweight robes. The choice of the word is often used to imply that the garments are alluring, fashionable, or both. Lingerie can be made of lightweight, stretchy, smooth, sheer or decorative fabrics such as silk, satin, Lycra, charmeuse, chiffon, or lace. These fabrics can also be made of various natural fibers like silk or cotton or of various synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon. This style  is nothing new. See-through fabrics were fashionable in Europe during the eighteenth century.

See-through clothing is any garment of clothing that’s made with lace, mesh or sheer fabric , as in the featured image, that allows the wearer’s body or undergarments to show through its fabric. See-through or sheer fabric, particularly in skin tone,, is sometimes called illusion, as in ‘illusion bodice’ due to giving the impression of exposed flesh, or a revealing ensemble. See-through materials of various kinds continue to be available for a wide range of clothing styles and is a common element in designer clothing that’s part of the “sheer fashion trend” that’s been prominent in fashion circles since 2008.

How I made this portrait: One of my guiding principles in photographing models is that I want them to me comfortable during the shoot. Some models project a sexy vibe and this shows in the outfits they choose to wear and the poses they come up with, while others have their own style.

Recently I  was fortunate to photograph Scarlet Ana for both the Corset Monday series and the upcoming #seethrough series. The lighting setup for this portrait consisted of two Paul C Buff DigiBee DB800’s monolights and one Alien Bee B800 monolight. One DigiBee DB800 was placed at camera right and was fairly close to Scarlet. It had a 37x27x12inch Plume Ltd. Wafer soft box attached. An Alien Bee B800 with an 16 x 30-inch Westcott Apollo Strip soft box mounted was located at camera left. Another DigiBee DB800 with a Paul C Buff 18-OMNI Reflector attached, softened by a triple-layer Diffusion Sock, was located at camera left and placed neat the back corner of my home studio.

The camera used was a Panasonic Lumix GH4 with a Lumix G Vario 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 lens (at 23mm) with an exposure of 1/125 sec at f/11 and ISO 200. The background was a hand painted Carbonite muslin from Silverlake Photo.
