Today’s Post by Joe Farace
In the first full week of April, National Library Week recognizes the enormous value that we receive from our libraries every day. Millions of people worldwide frequently celebrate libraries, but this week in April each year brings them into the spotlight and shows all the ways libraries benefit individuals and communities alike! In conjunction with the Advertising Council, the American Library Association founded the first National Library Week in 1958. To find out more, visit the American Library Association website.
Not only do libraries provide us with books to read, but they offer valuable tools and resources. Libraries are continually changing to meet the demands of today’s technology and ever-expanding volumes of knowledge. Technology and those who coordinate the effort to keep them up to date have been challenged to provide a wide range of media, and they have met the need. And they’ve stepped up to the challenge, too!

How I Made This Photo: I photographed Erin Valakari against the backdrop of the three bookcases that are located in the dining room of my home. There are also a few small bookcases in my home office, along with a smaller one that’s built in as well as a few movie-related books on shelves near my TV. When we moved into Daisy Hill eleven years ago, the moving company told me I had more than 3,000 books. I’ve probably added a few more since then but I also periodically donate books to the local library where they’re sold to fund their activities. Camera used for this portrait was a Panasonic Lumix GH4 and Olympus M. Zuiko 45mm F1.8 lens with an exposure of 1/50 sec at f/8 and ISO 200. Lighting was provided by one of my Rotolight NEO 2 LED light sources.
Next Sunday post will be a valentine to libraries and will kick off a new feature that’s not necessarily about photography called “Joe’s Book Club.” Much like Joe’s Film Box this series of blog posts will be a virtual book club that includes some personal context about books, libraries and reading along with a recommendation for a book that I am reading during this time period. I hope you like it, but keep in mind that I am writing 365 blog posts a year and if you don’t like a particular post, just like a buses, there will be another one coming along soon that you may like better, I hope so anyway. Happy Library Week.
