Each year on this day, National Make A Difference Day brings community service to the forefront. Lots of different organizations join together on the fourth Saturday in October to make a difference, big or small.

Make a Difference Day was originally created in 1992 by USA Weekend magazine and was joined by Points of Light. For more than twenty years they sponsored the largest national day of community service. These organizations no longer support Make a Difference Day but its observance still impacts communities around the country. Volunteers and organizations have taken up the banner to help their communities in ways that best fit their community’s needs.

How I Made this Photograph: I used my Canon A-1 and FD 50mm f/1.8 lens to photograph this (what I think may be an) emotional scene of someone supporting a friend who might be struggling. Exposure was unrecoreded. The Fuji Neopan 400 Professional was processed and scanned by The Darkroom in San Clemente, California. This image is an homage to one of my own photographs that I made during the 1970’s in Lafayette Square in Washington DC, when I worked in that city.

All across the country, organizations pick up the tools that are needed to help others during this weekend. The expression of love for each other through support and plain ol’ elbow grease is sometimes all that we need to make a difference in another’s life.

How To Observe Make A Difference Day
  • Volunteer in your community or to an organization that you think has merit.
  • Be a mentor. Help a young person or maybe another professional to gain new skills.
  • Make a donation to a charity that has some meaning to you.
  • Say a kind word of support to someone who is struggling. (see above photo.)
  • Put all of your skills to work. Sometimes our hobbies can bring joy to others in ways that we least expect.
