“I started dressing vintage when I was a teenager because I didn’t have money for designer clothes.”—Dita Von Teese

If you’re interested in glamour photography you might want to follow Dita Von Teese (@ditavonteese) on Instagram because of the interesting images that appear there on a regular basis. On Mondays one of her fan sites publishes glamour portraits a her wearing corsets, so I thought I’d keep #corsetmonday going this year.

There was a time in my glamour photography journey when I tried photographing every model swearing a corset during a shoot. That included lighting equipment reviews I wrote for the former print edition of Shutterbug. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that the editorial staff never allowed any of these photographs to be published. Since they wouldn’t let you see the images, I’m going to continue to publish them here, at least for a while.

Some of the models that are featured in this series have either never appeared  or may be under represented on this blog for several reasons, including the number of shoots I had with them. I was extremely lucky to get to photograph Safina. She is a multi-talented woman and as an artist, writer or model she excels in all of these roles. I was constantly surprised by the many skills and interests this creatve woman was involved in and she bought all of that talent to bear during our few sessions together.

How I Made This Portrait:  I only got to photograph Safina twice and today’s featured image is from our first session together and in it she exudes a deliciously retro vibe that expresses one of the many sides her unique personality.

The camera used for this portrait was a Panasonic Lumix GH4 with Lumix G Vario 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH./MEGA O.I.S. lens (at 43mm.)  Exposure was 1/125 sec at f/8 and ISO 100. The second session was a collaboration with my photographer/friend Cliff Lawson and we photographed her together when I was testing speedlights and FourSquare’s FSK48 48-inch softbox for Shutterbug magazine. Details about the lighting technique we used, including a setup for that shoot, can be seen here.

Right now, I’m looking for women interested in posing for photographs to be used for this blog during 2023. After signing a simple model release, you will receive your choice of a CD or flash drive containing all the approx 200 photographs that we’ll make during a session to take home on the day of the shoot. The model will receive full rights to use the images however they like. If you’re interested, click CONTACT and let’s talk.
