Wheels Wednesday: You Can Learn a Lot During a PhotoWalk

“You live and learn. At any rate, you live.” ― Douglas Adams

Life has a way of getting in the way of the “best laid plans” and I’ve been trying for a while to get monthly PhotoWalks to be held in conjunction with the Cars and Coffee events that are held (weather or not) at The Vehicle Vault in Parker, Colorado. So far there has been a big a gap between my good intentions and reality but I won’t give up, since Cars & Coffee season is shifting into its winter season. So maybe next year?

…but not what you might think…

This biggest misconception about what a PhotoWalk really is. A PhotoWalk is not a workshop but simply an excuse to get together outside, mingle with some fellow human beings and make some photographs. The best PhotoWalks help you meet new people and maybe  learn something new about photography along the way, even if it’s just a different way to use the camera you already own or maybe try a setting or approach you’ve never used before.

How I Made this Photograph: The Hillman Minx was a mid-sized family car that British car maker Hillman produced from 1931 to 1970. There were many versions of the Minx over that time, as well as badge engineered versions that were sold by Humber, Singer, and Sunbeam. For a short time in the early 1950s, Hillman Minxes were sold in the US for Americans seeking better fuel economy. American reviews of the vehicle were lukewarm.

I photographed this Hillman Minx convertible with a Canon EOS 5D Mark I and EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens (at 30mm.) The Av exposure was 1/320 sec at f/8 and ISO 100 with a plus one-third stop exposure compensation. The JPEG file was processed using Color Efex’s Polarization filter and lightly tweaked in Vivenza.

Because of my surgery in July, I didn’t’ launch Cars & Coffee PhotoWalks this year, I hope to do so in 2026. When attending any car show I often bring along a new camera or lens that I’m reviewing for this or my other blog. I’m always glad to let attendees shoot a few images with these cameras using their own memory cards.

The aspect I like the most about PhotoWalks is that I always learn something new during these events and so will you but more importantly you might just make a new friend.
