Today’s Post by Joe Farace

When I got outta High School I was driving a truck. I was just a poor boy from Memphis. —Elvis Presley

You might consider today’s image and post as part of a series of photographs of classic trucks that also included Photographing Yoga Truck” with an Epson RD1. If you’re only interested in the Epson RD-1, you might want to check out The Epson RD-1 in Black & White, when you get a chance. You’ll see other posts about trucks listed at the bottom of this post but WordPress often makes the third suggested “Related” post a “wild card” and you might see a post about portraiture or something that has nothing whatsoever to do with trucks.

In this case I’m photographing a vintage GMC pickup truck using a Canon EOS 60D. Trivia: GMC doesn’t mean what you think it means. Roots of the GMC brand can be traced back to 1900, when the Grabowsky Motor Company was established by brothers Max and Morris. In 1902 the brothers moved their operations to Pontiac, Michigan and the company was renamed the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. In 1909, William C. Durant gained control of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and made it a subsidiary of his General Motors Company.

I photographed this classic truck when I was testing the Canon EOS 60D for Shutterbug’s former print edition. While my review of the camera was kind of lukewarm, I was impressed enough to actually buy one of these versatile cameras and still have it to this day. For a long time is was my go-to camera for portraiture but I also shot a lot of cars and trucks with it.

How I made this photograph: Mary first sported this classic GMC truck while we were on our way to lunch one day. We were both struck by the color combination of the truck and the background that it presented. I made this exposure with the EOS 60D using an EF 28-135mm IS lens (at 33mm) with an exposure of 1/100 sec and f/22 and ISO 400.
