You might consider today’s post to be part of a series of posts about trucks that includes Photographing “Yoga Truck” with an Epson RD1, In this case I’m photographing a vintage pickup truck with a Canon EOS 20D.
Today’s Post by Joe Farace
My dad was a truck driver, and from the time I was knee high to a grapevine, I was driving a truck. —Johnny Van Zant
A barn find is typically considered to be a classic car or motorcycle that’s been discovered, often in derelict condition. The term comes from the tendency of these kinds of cars and trucks to be found in places such as barns and ranch outbuildings where they’ve been stored perhaps for many years. In truth “barn finds” can be found anywhere, some like the below truck, is not in any kind of building but out on the Colorado plains.

How I made this photograph: The above image was shot during an outing with my wife Mary and her foster parents who were visiting from out-of-state. Our trip started at a vintage aircraft museum and as we were headed back home I spotted this truck—I think it’s a Ford, let me know if I’m wrong—sitting in a field. I photographed the truck using a Canon EOS 20D along with a Tamron 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 lens (at 10mm.) The exposure was 1/320 sec at f/11 and ISO 400 with a plus one-third stop exposure compensation before being slightly tweaked with Vivenza and the Polarization filter in Color Efex. The Tamron lens I used to make this photograph was replaced with the 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD lens.
On my car photography
blog, I featured a review of Route 66 Barn Find Road Trip, a wonderful book about cruising The Mother Road looking for barn finds and derelicts that could be turned into the stuff that dreams are made from. A copy of Route 66 Barn Find Road Trip would make a wonderful gift for yourself or a loved one. If you’re undecided, please read my review and see what I have to say.
