See Through Series: Liz Love by Available Light

Today’s Post by Joe Farace

“Brevity is the soul of lingerie.” ― Dorothy Parker

Lingerie is a category of women’s clothing that includes undergarments, sleepwear and lightweight robes. The word implies that the garments are alluring and fashionable. Lingerie can be made of lightweight, stretchy, smooth, sheer or decorative fabrics such as silk, satin, Lycra, charmeuse, chiffon, or lace.

See-through clothing is any garment that’s made with lace, mesh or sheer fabric that allows the wearer’s body or undergarments to be seen through its fabric. See-through or sheer fabric, particularly in skin tone colors, is sometimes called illusion, as in ‘illusion bodice’ due to giving the impression of exposed flesh. This concept is not new. See-through fabrics were fashionable in Europe during the eighteenth century and are still available in a wide range of styles. This use of see-through fabrics as a element in designer clothes produced the “sheer fashion trend” that’s been predominant in fashion circles since 2008.

Models: Some of these models that featured in this series have either never appeared on this blog or may be under represented depending on how many shoots I did with them. The series continues today with a portrait of Liz aka Liz Love, an aspiring model who was sent to me when I had a working relationship with a local modeling agency and while this is no longer an option for me, it was great while it lasted.

Liz and I had three shoots together before she changed career directions. Like many of the models I photographed back in the day, I would really like to photograph her today because I think we could still create some great looking images together with her as an older, more experienced model. Every now and then I hear from some of the models I photographed 10, 15 and even 20 years ago and while I’m always glad to hear from them, more often than not they now are living out-of-state.

How I Made this Portrait: I photographed Liz in the home I lived in before moving to Daisy Hill and had a access to a home, albeit small, studio. That’s why every shoot Liz and I did was made on location, often in my home, as was the case, for today’s featured image.

I photographed Liz in the living room of my former home using only available light from the one of two narrow South-facing windows that are off-camera at left. The camera used was a Canon EOS 10D with EF 85mm f/1.8 lens with an exposure of 1/250 sec at f/3.5 and ISO 800 with a minus one-half stop exposure compensation. DNR was applied with Dfine, with some light retouching and then layering the Glamour Glow filter from Color Efex.

Special Note: I would like to keep the #seethrough series going throughout 2023. To do that I’m looking for women interested in posing wearing see-through clothing or lingerie for this blog. After signing a simple model release, they will receive their choice of a CD or flash drive containing all the approx 200 photographs we’ll make to take home the day of the shoot. The model will also receive full rights to use the images however they like. If you’re interested, click CONTACT and let’s talk.
