Corset Monday: Still Inspired by Dita Von Teese

Today’s Post by Joe Farace

“Ignore the critics… Only mediocrity is safe from ridicule. Dare to be different!” ― Dita Von Teese

If you’re interested in glamour photography I suggest you follow the Instagram feed of Dita Von Teese (@ditavonteese) because she posts some inspirational images. Each Monday one of her Instagram fan sites publishes a series of glamour portraits of her wearing a corset, which inspired me to give #corsetmonday a try here.

For some time, when I make the wardrobe suggestion to models I always suggest corsets—if they have any.  I even created these kinds of images when I was writing and shooting reviews of lighting equipment reviews for the print edition of Shutterbug. My recollection is that the magazine never publish a single one of these images although in looking through my records I continued to summit them. Since they wouldn’t let you see the images, I’m going to continue to publish them on these Corset Monday posts but I could use your help. (see below)

Some of the models in this series have either never appeared on this blog or may be under represented because of how few shoots I did with them

The series continues today with a portrait of Liz aka Liz Love an aspiring model who was sent to me when I had a working relationship with a local modeling agency and while that is no longer a viable option for me, it was great while it lasted.

How I Made this Portrait: I photographed Liz in my former home before moving to Daisy Hill and had a home studio. Every shoot Liz and I did together was done on location, often in my home, as was the case, for today’s featured image.

Liz and I had three shoots together before she changed career directions. Like many of the models I photographed back in the day, I would really like to photograph her today because I think we could still create some great looking images together with her as an older, more experienced-in-life model. Every now and then I hear from some of the models I photographed 10, 15 and even 20 years ago and while I’m always glad to hear from them, more often than not they now are living out-of-state…

I photographed Liz in the space between the foyer and living room of my former home using only available light from the two narrow South-facing windows that are behind her and the large North-facing, second floor windows that’s behind my camera. The camera used was a Canon EOS 50D with EF 85mm f/1.8 lens and exposure of 1/90 sec at f/2 and ISO 400. DNR was applied with Dfine, with some light retouching and then layering the Glamour Glow filter from Color Efex.

Special Note: I would like to keep #corsetmonday alive throughout 2023. To do that I’m looking for women interested in posing wearing corsets for this blog series. After signing a simple model release, they will receive their choice of a CD or flash drive containing all the approx 200 photographs we’ll make to take home the day of the shoot. The model will also receive full rights to use the images however they like. If you’re interested, click CONTACT and let’s talk.
