Film Friday: Canon AL-1 Field Test
The AL-1 was Canon’s first attempt into autofocus and while far from being true AF, the AL-1 featured what Canon called QF focus-assist (Quick Focus) system for focus confirmation. It used phase detection linear CCD arrays and in the viewfinder, red arrows indicated the direction to turn the lens to achieve sharp focus.
