Any portrait shoot is a collaborative effort so its important that you talk to your subject and discuss what you and they would like to accomplish during a shoot–before you even pick up a camera.

For those of you who follow me on Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, you may be asking, “Where you been?” The truth is that I’ve been taking a break from social media for reasons that are best articulated in my post Is Social Media Helping Your Photography Business or Just a Waste of Time? but if you don’t have time to read that its essence can be boiled down to: It’s not doing anything for me.

And in case you’re counting, I just started reading book number 39 for 2022, Low Pastures by Bill James, an English mystery about a murder in, you guessed it, a boat dock.

I expected the results from shooting Fujicolor NPH 400 to look a lot like Fuji’s version of Kodak’s expensive Portra 400 that all the cool kids on the Internet like to shoot. It didn’t.

I really don’t know how many women I have photographed in my life. Is it one hundred, I dunno, maybe more. Is it 200? OK, maybe that’s it but I still don’t know. One thing that I do know is that every now and then there would be several women with the same name—take Ashley for example.
