When it comes to determining exposures for portraiture—outdoors or in-studio—there are all kinds of so-called rules telling you what the ideal lighting ratio should be. You’ll often hear the ratio of 3:1 tossed around but  Renaissance painters used an approach called chiaroscuro that featured lighting ratios that would make most studio photographer’s hair catch fire but in the process they created art that transcended the centuries.

Henry Fonda (1905–1982) was one of my favorite actors from the Golden Era of Hollywood films. Recently I had the chance, quite by accident of viewing back-to-back over two days, two of his films. One was from the beginning of his career, the other from near the end. Here are my takes on the movie and Fonda’s participation in them.

Everybody needs a hobby, and in my case, one of mine is that I like to photograph barns. As the Colorado landscape becomes ever more urbanized it’s become a challenge to search of old farm structures. If you keep your eyes open you can find one like the below that are closer to home.

We all have cars that we’ve previously owned and loved but we can’t always remember why we sold them. Today is an exception; I know why I sold it. It’s the latest in my  #wheelswednesday series of posts about some of the interesting cars I’ve I’ve owned. In this case, it’s my (former) 1971 Porsche 914-4 that I bought brand new, back in the day.
