A Look at Photography Genres: A New Theme

According to Wikipedia, photography is the art, application, and practice of creating durable images by recording light, either electronically by means of an image sensor, or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film.

And they go on… a lens is used to focus the light reflected or emitted from objects into a real image on the light-sensitive surface inside a camera during a timed exposure.

Film: The result with a photographic emulsion is an invisible latent image, which is later chemically “developed” into a visible image, either negative or positive, depending on the purpose of the photographic material and method of processing. A negative image on film is traditionally used to photographically create a positive image on a paper base, known as a print, either by using an enlarger or by contact printing.

Digital: With an electronic image sensor, this produces an electrical charge at each pixel, which is electronically processed and stored in a digital image file for subsequent display or processing with a computer. As an interesting (or not) aside: In February 1990, in my monthly column for Photomethods magazine I wrote about digital imaging. The editor was so upset about what I wrote that he published a disclaimer in front of it that said, “this is just Joe’s opinion and I’m not so sure about the while concept of using computers in photography” Six months later the magazine’s name was changed to Photo>Electronic Imaging and the editor was gone. Alas, the magazine too is now gone.

Exploring Genres

Adobe came up with a list of genres and that describe how photography is generally used and I’m planning on exploring—on a highly personal basis—each or, at least, many of these topics starting real soon now. But once it gets started, I’ll keep it going. At least, as best as I can.

Here are the topics and if you have any favorites that you want to have a higher priority than some of the other, just click the CONTACT tab and send me email.

How I Made this Photo: This infrared image is an homage to the work of the late Jerry Uelsmann (1934-1987.) He was an American photographer who received international recognition for surreal, enigmatic photographs made with his unique method of composite printing and his dedication to revealing the deepest emotions of the human condition. I know that my work will never come close to what this genius produced but that won’t stop me from trying.
