Today’s Post by Joe Farace
Here’s today’s tip: You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on camera equipment to make high quality boudoir and glamour photographs. Although many pros shoot with top-of-the-line Nikon and Canon DSLR’s, you don’t have to do the same thing. There are plenty of reasonably priced DSLR or mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses offering sophisticated electronics that are available from the Big Two as well as Panasonic, Pentax, Olympus, Fuji and Sony. Be sure to check out their lower and mid-priced models. And while you’re shopping don’t forget refurbs.
As a beginning glamour photographer, you may find that it’s more useful to invest in a $600 (or less) camera and a few lenses, instead of owning a $2,000 camera and a single lens. Recently I recommended the under-$500 Panasonic Lumix G7 with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II ASPH Mega OIS. lens to a young photographer as something that would perfectly fit their needs.
Take the above image for example: It was made with an Olympus E-M10 Mark I and their amazing M. Zuiko 45mm f/1.8 lens with an exposure of 1/30 sec at f/7.1 and ISO 400. The image was retouched and then enhanced with the Glamour Glow filter that’s part of Color Efex Pro. As I write this, you can purchase a reconditioned and also newer E-M10 Mark II with its surprisingly sharp 14-42mm kit lens for $429.99 direct from Oly as I write this. It doesn’t get more entry level than that.
These days most of my contemporary glamour and boudoir images are made with a Panasonic Lumix GH4. Perhaps you saw my post on recent problems with this camera that may be solved. Look for an update on this, positive or negative, real soon now. As I write this I don’t know if that still will be my first choice for glamour and boudoir photography but I have lot’s of other options available, including that very same Olympus E-M10 Mark I.
I am now taking registration for a series on 1-on-1 Photography Workshops to be held in my home studio. To schedule a time, click the Contact button above or e-mail me directly at joefarace at gmail dot com.
My book Joe Farace’s Glamour Photography features information about using minimal equipment for glamour and boudoir photography demonstrating how to shoot portraits in available light situations or using simple lighting gear, including speedlights. New copies of the book are available from Amazon.com for $21.59 with uses copies selling for $3.61 as I write this, which is a good a bargain as you’ll find anywhere.
